Mechanism of glucose and maltose transport in plasma-membrane vesicles from the yeast Candida utilis

Transport of glucose and maltose was studied in plasma-membrane vesicles from Candida utilis. The yeast was grown on a mixture of glucose and maltose in aerobic carbon-limited continuous cultures which enabled transport to be studied for both sugars

Candida utilis CBS 621 exhibits the Kluyver effect for maltose, i.e. this yeast can respire maltose and is able to ferment glucose, but is unable to ferment maltose. When glucose was pulsed to a maltose-grown, oxygen-limited chemostat culture of C. u

Growth energetics of the acetic acid bacterium Acetobacter pasteurianus were studied with aerobic, ethanol-limited chemostat cultures. In these cultures, production of acetate was negligible. Carbon limitation and energy limitation were also evident

Acetobacter pasteurianus LMG 1635 was studied for its potential application in the enantioselective oxidation of alcohols. Batch cultivation led to accumulation of acetic acid and loss of viability. These problems did not occur in carbon-limited chem
