Although the dissemination of tuberculosis is aerogenic, less than 10% of infected subjects develop the active disease. Local immunity plays a major role in systemic cell-mediated immunity against this disease. BCG immunization may be more effective

Airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), chronic airway inflammation and predominance of the T helper type-2 (Th2; IL-4, IL-5, IL-13) over the Th1 (IL-2, IFN-gamma) immune response are hallmarks of asthma. Alveolar macrophages (AM) are the most numerous ce

Cell-mediated immunity plays a key role in containing the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the host. The induction of an antibody response or a mixed cell-mediated and humoral response is frequently associated with tuberculosis disease or a de

Aquired resistance against tuberculosis depends on the survival, multiplication and persistence of BCG in the host organs. Therefore, the viability and stabilisation during storage of BCG vaccine constitute a major attribute for good immunogenicity.

Background Lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients are chronically infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Increased airway constriction has been reported in CF patients but underplaying mechanisms have not been elucidated. Aim: to examine the effect of

In order to improve our knowledge of the effect of daylight on freeze-dried and rehydrated BCG, 8 BCG vaccines prepared with four BCG strains--Danish 1331, French 1173-P2, English (Glaxo-1077) and Japanese 172--were studied. Four of them were in ambe
