Fibers of poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) have been submitted to both hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation media in order to generate samples with different types and degrees of chain breakage. Random chain hydrolysis is clearly enhanced by varying te

The non-isothermal crystallization of the biodegradable poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). In the first case, Avrami, Ozawa, Mo, Cazé, and Frie

Thermal properties and crystallization kinetics of poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) have been studied. The polymer shows the typical complex melting behavior associated to different lamellar populations. Annealing processes had great repercussions on p

A long-term absorbable monofilament suture was developed using poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) made from a biosynthetically produced homopolymer of the natural metabolite 4-hydroxybutyrate. The suture, called MonoMax, has prolonged strength retention.

Hydrolytic degradation of poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) films has been studied considering media of different pH values (i.e., 3, 7 and 10) and temperatures (i.e., 37 and 55 °C). Enzymatic degradation has also been evaluated at physiological condit

Bacterial repellence in suture materials is a desirable property that can potentially improve the healing process by preventing infection. We describe a method for generating nanostructures at the surface of commercial sutures of different compositio

This paper describes the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers by living radical polymerization (NMP) of new styrene-like monomers. The polar monomers (ethylene oxide side chains and free hydroxyl- or amino-groups after deprotection) were polymer

The characterization of the degradation of surgical sutures (~500 µm diameter) up to ~9 mm in tissue phantoms and up to ~3 mm depth in euthanized mice, and its potential application in in vivo animals is demonstrated using a custom dark-field photo-
