Dark spatial optical solitons comprise a uniform background wave that is modulated by an obliquely-propagating 'dip' in the light intensity profile. Appearing throughout nonlinear science, these universal entities possess a phase topology that endows

We report on our latest developments in the field of Helmholtz soliton theory: the derivation of exact dark spatial optical solitons for a defocusing saturable nonlinearity. A raft of new physical predictions is made, and extensive analysis (via both

Angular configurations play a fundamental role in essentially all nonlinear photonic architectures: from beam multiplexing applications, to scattering at a single interface, to evolution inside patterned optical structures. Equations of the nonlinear

We explore a more complete model for describing the evolution of scalar optical pulses in generic nonlinear waveguides. The electromagnetic wave envelope satisfies a dimensionless equation that is of the Helmholtz type. Our\ud approach is to retain t

We propose a novel nonlinear Helmholtz equation for modelling pulses in optical waveguides. Exact analytical solitons are reported for a wide variety of nonlinearities. Connections to special relativity are explored.

Graphene, despite its many remarkable material properties, is fundamentally limited for many photonic and microelectronic applications due to its semi-metallic nature. Chemical functionalisation of graphene affords one route toward opening an energy
