Contact-dependent growth inhibition (CDI) is an important mechanism of bacterial competition. Here, Bartelli et al. show that proteolytic processing of a CDI toxin induces a conformational switch required for translocation into target bacteria.

Many Gram-negative bacteria use CdiA effector proteins to inhibit the growth of neighboring competitors. CdiA transfers its toxic CdiA-CT region into the periplasm of target cells, where it is released through proteolytic cleavage. The N-terminal cyt

Kinetic and thermodynamic constants associated with DNA hybridization were determined in solution using fluorescence measurements and complementary fluorophore-labeled oligomers. One oligomer was labeled with a 5'-terminal fluorescein, and the other

DNA was assayed in a homogeneous format using DNA probes containing hybridization-sensitive labels. The DNA probes were prepared from complementary DNA strands in which one strand was covalently labeled on the 5'-terminus with fluorescein and the com
