Progression of a spruce budworm outbreak over seven years is associated with increased soil nutrient fluxes and availability and improved foliage quality in surviving host trees. This could create a bottom-up feedback that sustains an insect outbreak

Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) is the most vulnerable species to the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana), one of the most devastating defoliators in the world. For decades, pest managers have advocated for reducing its abundance in the landscape t

Abstract Spruce budworm (SBW) outbreaks are a major natural disturbance in boreal forests of eastern North America. During large‐scale infestations, aerial spraying of bacterial insecticides is used to suppress local high‐density SBW populations.

Context Although the spatiotemporal dynamics of spruce budworm outbreaks have been intensively studied, forecasting outbreaks remains challenging. During outbreaks, budworm-linked warblers (Tennessee, Cape May, and bay-breasted warbler) show a strong

Disturbance regimes are changing in forests across the world in response to global climate change. Despite the profound impacts of disturbances on ecosystem services and biodiversity, assessments of disturbances at the global scale remain scarce. Her

In a climate change context, the sequestration of atmospheric carbon (C) in forests is key for achieving emission targets. It is thus critical to understand how large-scale disturbances are affecting the overall forest C stocks. C dynamics in North A
