We prove that the Modℤ reduction of the Reidemeister torsion of a rational homology 3-sphere is naturally a ℚ/ℤ-valued quadratic function uniquely determined by a ℚ/ℤ-constant and the linking form.

The goal of this book is to introduce the reader to some of the most frequently used techniques in modern global geometry. Suited to the beginning graduate student willing to specialize in this very challenging field, the necessary prerequisite is a

This is a state-of-the-art introduction to the work of Franz Reidemeister, Meng Taubes, Turaev, and the author on the concept of torsion and its generalizations. Torsion is the oldest topological (but not with respect to homotopy) invariant that in i

We prove that a Gaussian ensemble of smooth random sections of a real vector bundle \(E\) over compact manifold \(M\) canonically defines a metric on \(E\) together with a connection compatible with it. Additionally, we prove a refined Gauss-Bonnet t

Denote by Znthe number of critical points of a random trigonometric polynomial of degree ≤ n We prove that as ν→∞ the expectation of Zν is asymptotic to 2ν √⅗ while its variance is asymptotic to δ∞νwhere δ∞≈ 0.35.

In this volume the author presents, in great detail and with many examples, a basic collection of principles, techniques, and applications needed to conduct independent research in gauge theory and its use in geometry and topology. Complete and self-

We investigate the Dolbeault operator on a pair of pants, i.e., an elementary cobordism between a circle and the disjoint union of two circles. This operator induces a canonical selfadjoint Dirac operator Dt on each regular level set Ct of a fixed Mo
