Nonanadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) exhibit a combination of variation in life history, habitat, and species co-existence matched by few vertebrates. Distributed in eastern North America and northern Europe, habitat ranges from hundreds of me

1. Atlantic salmon populations have declined in recent decades. Many of the threats to the species during its freshwater and coastal residency periods are known, and management approaches are available to mitigate them. The global scale of climate ch

Hydropower plant operating conditions are expected to change to be more in tandem with intermittent power production so as to meet the requirements of the Paris Agreement, which in turn may negatively impact ecolog- ical conditions downstream of the

Use of fast-growing domesticated and/or genetically-modified strains of fish is becoming increasingly common in aquaculture, increasing the likelihood of deliberate or accidental introductions into the wild. To date, their ecological impacts on ecosy

Domestication involves adapting animals to the human-controlled environment. Genetic changes occurring during the domestication process may manifest themselves in phenotypes that render domesticated animals maladaptive for life in the wild. Domestica

“Småblank” is the only population of Atlantic salmon in Europe living its entire life in the river habitat without performing migrations to the sea or lakes. Home range size and habitat use were compared between an unregulated tributary and hydr

Rapid dewatering in rivers as a consequence of hydropower operations may cause stranding of juvenile fish and have a negative impact on fish populations. We implemented stranding into an Atlantic salmon population model in order to evaluate long-term

Escaped farmed Atlantic salmon interbreed with wild Atlantic salmon, leaving off- spring that often have lower success in nature than pure wild salmon. On top of this, presence of farmed salmon descendants can impair production of wild‐type recruit

a b s t r a c t In this paper, we present a spatially explicit individual-based mechanistic model for predicting the freshwater population abundance of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). The model simulates the complete life-cycle at small spatial (
