We believe we report the first demonstration of a broad-range (15.7 nm) tuning of fiber Bragg grating using fast, programmable, and latchable magnetic actuation. A key advantage is that the device requires no power except when shifting wavelengths.

A compact, multichannel dispersion-compensating filter is demonstrated with D=/spl plusmn/4200 ps/nm, a /spl plusmn/5 ps group delay ripple, low loss, a 4.5-GHz passband, and the design to compensate for higher-order dispersion.

Two reconfigurable add/drop multiplexers that can be switched without degrading the transmission of other channels are reviewed. They are based on UV-induced Bragg gratings and thermo-optic switches in a planar waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
