The multiwavelength optical networking (MONET) consortium has demonstrated national-scale optical networking in a multilocation testbed in New Jersey. The demonstration involves transparent optical connections over path lengths as long as 2290 km, th

The performance of an eight-channel, 2.5 Gb/s OEIC photoreceiver array in an eight-wavelength long-distance WDM testbed is described. The sensitivity penalties due to crosstalk and transmission are measured, and the source of crosstalk is investigate

For large-volume optoelectronics applications, the low cost, manufacturability and reliability of silicon MOSFET technology are advantageous. In addition, silicon photodetectors operate quite efficiently at the 850 nm wavelength of economical AlGaAs

A bidirectional transmission system with 16 10-Gb/s dense wavelength-division-multiplexing channels on 32 wavelengths is demonstrated over 5000 km (50/spl times/100 km) of nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber in a fully bidirectional recirculating loop,

The benefits of distributed Raman amplification are demonstrated in a buried cabled field fiber. The performance improvement of 3.8 dB was achieved in a 5/spl times/120-km 10-Gb/s transmission experiment using 650-mW Raman amplification in each span

Eight 10-Gb/s DWDM channels spaced 200 GHz around 1565 nm are transmitted over six 40-km spans of standard SMF using five inline semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). SOAs are also used as booster and pre-amplifier in the transmitter and receiver,

We demonstrate the transmission of a 40-Gb/s signal over multiple (up to six) 120-km spans of conventional single-mode fiber (SMF). We use a very low duty cycle return-to-zero (RZ) format which employs optical pulses much shorter than the bit-period.
