Fully dense nanocrystalline tungsten (nc-W) with extremely high strength (∼3.0 GPa under quasi-static compression and ∼4.0 GPa under dynamic compression) has been obtained by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at low temperature (500 °C). The nanocryst

The microstructures of long rod [001] single-crystal penetrators of W grown by CVD and zone melt processing, and W-5% Ta grown by zone melt (ZM) processing, were examined before and after penetration into RHA steel targets, by optical metallography a

Deformation-flow microstructures associated with [001] W–4% Ta penetrator fragments in a rolled homogeneous steel armor target exhibit dynamic recrystallization. The equiaxed, recrystallized grain structure observed in the deformed penetrator is al

Deformation twins coincident with traces of {211} planes in sections cut from [001], [011], and [111] columnar-grained tungsten rod ballistic penetrators in rolled homogeneous armor targets have been identified by transmission electron microscopy and

The behaviors of a variety of high-density materials are compared in ballistic penetration experiments. The deformation and failure modes of these materials, under this high pressure and high strain rate loading environment, are studied via metallogr

We have systematically investigated the quasi-static and dynamic mechanical behavior (especially dynamic failure) of ultra-fine grained (UFG) tungsten (W) under uniaxial compression. The starting material is of commercial purity and large grain size.

With the aid of results from previous research on the vibration of stiffened plates, a study is made of the nodal patterns of a particular plate with orthogonally placed stiffeners. The pertinent theory of vibration of stiffened plates is introduced.
