The distribution of DNA content of symbiotic Chlorella algae freshly isolated from green hydra was compared with that of cultured Chlorella of the NC64A strain, using flow cytometry. In nonlogarithmic cultures of NC64A most cells had accumulated in G

During 1983, patchy but extensive mortality of several stony coral species occurred off the Pacific coast of PanamB, associated with loss of their symbiotic zooxanthellae. This disturbance was coincident with the prolonged 1983 E1 Nino warming event.

An equation is derived which rigorously defines the photosynthesis: respiration ratio (P:R) for any alga: invertebrate symbiotic association arid permits the computation of the fractional contribution of translocated algal carbon to the daily respira

Symbiotic Mastigias from Eil Malk Jellyfish Lake and Palau lagoon take up and retain ammonium during both day and night. Uptake is due to symbiotic dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae). Nitrate is not taken up, and is barely detectable in the environment.

Of several genera tested, only those Pacific reef corals symbiotic with zooxanthellae take up and retain ammonium. Uptake and retention are enhanced by light, and the normal daylight period is sufficient to sustain ammonium retention during the night

Daily budgets of photosynthetically fixed carbon were constructed for Pteraeolidia ianthina with high and low densities of zooxanthellae, for irradiances typical of latitude 34° S in winter, spring and summer. Whereas nudibranchs with high densities

Algae injected into green hydra are taken up rapidly and in relatively large numbers, resulting in an increased symbiont population in digestive cells. The increase is temporary and the normal stock population size is restored within 24 hours after i
