The predicted Exigobacterium sibiricum bacterirhodopsin gene was amplified from an ancient Siberian permafrost sample. The protein bacteriorhodopsin from Exiguobacterium sibiricum (ESR) encoded by this gene was expressed in Escherichia coli membrane.
