We report new theories and simulations for electron acceleration in magnetic islands generated by magnetic reconnection in the shock turbulence in a quasi-parallel shock, using a 2 and 1/2 dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. When an island is mo

Global magnetospheric effects resulting from the passage at Earth of large-scale structures have been well studied. The effects of common and short-term features, such as discontinuities and current sheets (CSs), have not been studied in the same dep

We perform a 2.5-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation of a quasi-parallel shock, using parameters for the Earth’s bow shock, to examine electron acceleration and heating due to magnetic reconnection. The shock transition region evolves from the

On 2020 April 19–20, a solar ejection was seen by spacecraft in a radial alignment that included Solar Orbiter and Wind. The ejection contained a magnetic flux rope where magnetic field and plasma parameters were well correlated between spacecraft.

Owing to its low density and high temperature, the solar wind frequently exhibits strong departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium, which include distinct temperatures for its constituent ions. Prior studies have found that the ratio of the tem

Turbulent magnetic reconnection in a quasi-parallel shock under parameters relevant to the Earth's bow shock is investigated by means of a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The addressed aspects include the reconnection electric field, the

The properties of the suprathermal particle distributions observed upstream of interplanetary shocks depend not only on the properties of the shocks but also on the transport conditions encountered by the particles as they propagate away from the sho
