[reaction: see text] A stereocontrolled synthesis of the DE fragment (2) of the marine alkaloid upenamide (1) is described. The synthesis proceeds in 12 steps from caprolactone (10) and 20-25% overall yield.

Asymmetric intramolecular Heck cyclization of endocyclic enamides occurs at room temperature to give indoloizidine and azaazulene ring systems in up to 86% enantiomeric excess. A synthesis of (+)-epiindolizidine 167B and formal synthesis of 5 E ,9 Z

A PCP-type catalyst was prepared and examined within the context of intramolecular Heck reactions. A substrate possessing a 1,4-diene system effectively poisoned the PCP catalyst leading to no reaction. This behavior contrasts with the typical pallad
