Distortions induced by erbium doped fiber amplifiers on optical AM signals are shown, experimentally and theoretically, to originate from the so called locked-inversion gain tilt of the amplifier. The locked-inversion gain tilt may be measured by sim

As still higher gains in erbium-doped fiber amplifiere (EDFAs) are reported (see, e.g., Ref. 1 reporting a gain of 49 dB), it becomes increasingly interesting to identify the ultimate limit to the gain in EDFAs and the causes for it.

In this investigation an accurate three-level and two-level model for the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is used to calculate the pump efficiency, optimizing fiber design for 0.98- and 1.48-μm pumping, respectively.

Based on fundamental Erbium-doped fiber data, theoretical predictions show excellent agreement with all measured amplifier characteristics. 39.6 dB gain is demonstrated using a 654 nm pump source.
