We utilized a powder-based, 3D printing technique for prototyping optical fibers. Co-doped silica rods were printed using sub-micron powders with various compositions. The rods were sleeved and drawn into fibers. Ti/Al/Er-co-doped fibers are demonstr

The optical fiber itself can function as a partially reflecting concentric cavity interferometer when transversely probed by a focused laser beam. In this study, the thermal response of the fiber heated by a CO2-laser beam was characterized by monito

Monitoring the back-scattered light from a microsphere, acting as a low-Q concentric cavity interferometer, enables non-contact, in-situ measurement of diameter variations. The interferometric technique is used for improving ellipticity during micros

Silicon core fibers offer unique possibilities for THz transmission, mid-IR sensing, Raman amplifiers and nonlinear optical devices [1] . Since as-drawn silicon core fibers typically have optical transmission losses in excess of 10dBcm −1 suitable

We investigate CO 2 laser processing of SiGe-core glass fibers, and show that homogeneous, low optical loss cores can be made. Coaxial Ge-rich centers within the semiconductor cores can also be fabricated.

CO2 laser processing offers the possibility to inscribe structures within glass-clad SiGe-core fibers by altering the spatial distribution of the Si and Ge. Spatial segregation of Ge to the end of a fiber is shown via optical transmission measurement
