Forward Brillouin scattering interactions support the sensing and analysis of media outside the cladding boundaries of standard fibers, where light cannot reach. Quantitative point-sensing based on this principle has yet to be reported. In this work,

Forward Brillouin point sensing is demonstrated in a multi-core fiber. Acoustic waves are stimulated by light in one core and monitored using a grating in another. Measurements distinguish between ethanol and water outside the cladding.

Propagation in the cladding modes of standard optical fibers enables the sensing of chemicals outside the fiber boundary, where light in the single core mode cannot reach. Coupling to the cladding modes typically relies on the inscription of permanen

Inter-polarization forward stimulated Brillouin scattering is studied in standard, polarization maintaining fibers. The process is driven by two orthogonally polarized pump tones. The stimulated acoustic waves induce non-reciprocal polarization switc

Torsional-radial guided acoustic modes in standard single-mode fibers are stimulated by pump tones of linear and orthogonal polarizations. The same acoustic modes induce photo-elastic birefringence. Circularly polarized pump waves can generate acoust

The compression of extended, coded sequences allows for laser ranging measurements with low peak power levels. Previous realizations of this approach were restricted by additive noise of direct, incoherent detection. In this work we bring together pu
