Abstract In the southwestern area of the Kurile Islands subduction zone, three large earthquakes including the M w8.2 1969 and the M w8.3 1994 Hokkaido Toho-oki earthquakes and the M w7.8 1975 tsunami earthquake occurred in almost the same location.

Abstract Inversion tectonics, in which old normal faults act as reverse faults in current stress fields, are frequently observed in northeastern Japan (Tohoku District); however, the conditions that control these fault activities remain unclear. To i

Abstract In subduction zones, slow slip events (SSEs) have been observed in the portion deeper than the downdip edge of seismogenic zone. However, since it is far offshore from geodetic networks on land, shallow SSEs near the trench axis are hardly o

Abstract We make trial binary forecasts for the Kurile–Japan subduction zone for the period 1988–2014 by hypothesizing that seismic quiescence (i.e., the absence of earthquakes of M ≥ 5 for a minimum period of T q) is a precursor of a large (7.

Abstract Distinct later phases of waves with rich high-frequency (> 8 Hz) components were observed for intraslab earthquakes that occurred at intermediate depths, particularly at depths exceeding 100 km, in the northeastern (NE) Japan subduction zone

Abstract The tectonic stress field was investigated in and around the aftershock area of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake (M JMA = 6.7) occurred on 6 September 2018. We deployed 26 temporary seismic stations in the aftershock area for approximat

Abstract The Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake (M JMA = 6.7) occurred on September 6, 2018, in the Hokkaido corner region where the Kurile and northeastern Japan island arcs meet. We relocated aftershocks of this intraplate earthquake immediately aft

An earthquake catalog created by the International Seismological Center (ISC) was analyzed, including 3898 earthquakes located in and around Japan between January 1964 and June 2012 shallower than 60 km with the body wave magnitude of 5.0 or larger.

We estimated 275 focal mechanisms from P-wave first-motion polarities of small earthquakes obtained in an extensive seismic survey during 2004–2008 in and around the Atotsugawa fault, central Japan, where ongoing dextral shear strain concentration
