Abstract Climate warming threatens to destabilize vast northern permafrost areas, potentially releasing large quantities of organic carbon that could further disrupt the climate. Here we synthesize paleorecords of past permafrost-carbon dynamics to c

A climate sensitive permafrost region (Yedoma domain) was found to contain globally relevant N stock of >40 Gt nitrogen, of which 4 to 16 Gt of the N could become available by thaw until 2100. This study increases the current estimates by nearly 50%.

Reservoirs of ^14 C-depleted methane (CH _4 ), a potent greenhouse gas, residing beneath permafrost are vulnerable to escape where permafrost thaw creates open-talik conduits. However, little is known about the magnitude and variability of this metha

Ice-rich permafrost in the circum-Arctic and sub-Arctic (hereafter pan-Arctic), such as late Pleistocene Yedoma, are especially prone to degradation due to climate change or human activity. When Yedoma deposits thaw, large amounts of frozen organic m

Permafrost carbon feedback modeling has focused on gradual thaw of near-surface permafrost leading to greenhouse gas emissions that accelerate climate change. Here the authors show that deeper, abrupt thaw beneath lakes will more than double radiativ

About 40% of the annual methane emissions originate from natural, non-anthropogenic sources. These include mainly freshwater sediments, in which significant increase in methane emissions has been observed throughout the past decades with the ongoing

Thermokarst lakes in the Arctic and Subarctic release carbon from thawing permafrost in the form of methane and carbon dioxide with important implications for regional and global carbon cycles. Lake ice impedes the release of gas during the winter. F

Coastal wetlands are important components in the global carbon cycle; however, little is known regarding the carbon sink and source capacity of coastal wetlands in the northern high latitudes, nor their importance in the global methane budget. In thi
