The question "What is a photon?" motivates an analysis of the interface between quantum field theory and non-relativistic quantum mechanics (QM). Despite the predictive success of quantum field theory, it retains many non-relativistic concepts while

The covariant Klein-Gordon equation requires twice the boundary conditions of the Schrodinger equation and does not have an accepted single-particle interpretation. Instead of interpreting its solution as a probability wave determined by an initial b

The advent of 3rd generation light sources such as the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at LBL, and the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne, have produced a revolution in x-ray probing of dense matter during the past decade. These machines use electron-sync

A critical issue in high-intensity laser-solid interactions is the effect of the laser prepulse on the target, but the experimental details of these lower-intensity interactions are often difficult to measure due to the subsequent high-intensity puls

At LLNL we have been working to integrate an intense short-pulse laser with a low-emittance relativistic electron beam utilizing a 100 MeV S-band linac. This project uses a 100 TW, 35 fs laser, which is currently under development.
