We present a detailed description of a fundamental group algorithm based on Forman's combinatorial version of Morse theory. We use this algorithm in a classification problem of prime knots up to 14 crossings.

High-energy astrophysics is a relatively young scientific field, made possible by space-borne telescopes. During the half-century history of x-ray astronomy, the sensitivity of focusing x-ray telescopes-through finer angular resolution and increased

X-rays provide one of the few bands through which we can study the epoch of reionization, when the first galaxies, black holes and stars were born. To reach the sensitivity required to image these first discrete objects in the universe needs a major

Deep Chandra exposures reveal the presence of diffuse X-ray emission with a luminosity of 1.3x10^{39} ergs s^{-1} from the spiral galaxy NGC 3184. This appears to be truly diffuse thermal emission distinct from the low-luminosity LMXB emission. While

We have analyzed data from two sets of calibration observations of the Moon made by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In addition to obtaining a spectrum of the bright side that shows several distinct fluorescence lines, we also clearly detect time-vari

We present an exploratory Chandra ACIS-S3 study of the diffuse component of the Cosmic X-ray Background in the 0.3-7 keV band for four directions at high Galactic latitudes, with emphasis on details of the ACIS instrumental background modeling. Obser

A high spectral resolution observation of the diffuse X-ray background in the 60 - 1000 eV energy range has been made using an array of thirty-six 1 mm^2 micro-calorimeters flown on a sounding rocket. Detector energy resolution ranged from 5-12 eV FW

Deep Chandra LETG+HRC-S observations of the isolated neutron star candidate RX J1856.5-3754 have been analysed to search for metallic and resonance cyclotron spectral features and for pulsation behaviour. As found from earlier observations, the X-ray

We present images from five observations of the quasar 3C 273 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The jet has at least four distinct features which are not resolved in previous observations. The first knot in the jet (A1) is very bright in X-rays. It

We present the first X-ray spectrum obtained by the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum is of Capella and covers a wavelength range of 5-175 A (2.5-0.07 keV). The measured wavelength
