We investigate sulphur, chlorine and fluorine release during explosive, effusive and intrusive phases the 2011 Cordón Caulle eruption, with a focus on halogen devolatilization. Petrological analysis shows halogen release to have been promoted by iso

Here the authors document evidence of ultrafine ash captured within ash-venting nozzles at Cordón Caulle volcano (Chile). This decouples eruptive processes from the emitted products, as explained by a new model of in-vent ash migration and sticking.

Abstract The viscosity of magma exerts control on all aspects of its migration through the crust to eruption. This was particularly true for the 2021 eruption of Cumbre Vieja (La Palma), which produced exceptionally fast and fluid lava at high discha

The conditions under which halogens partition in favor of an exsolved fluid relative to the coexisting melt are key for understanding many magmatic processes, including volcanic degassing, evolution of crustal melt bodies, and ore formation. We repor

The effect of F and Cl on the liquidus temperature of a hydrous (~3.5–4 wt% H2O) trachytic melt (~66 wt% SiO2) at 925 to 990 °C and at 100 MPa has been experimentally investigated. We employed a novel disequilibrium approach involving diffusion co

Silicic volcanic eruptions commonly begin with the explosive ejection of pyroclastic material, before transitioning to gentler effusion-dominated activity. Well-exposed dissected silicic systems are scarce and poorly studied, hindering the advances i

Eruptive dynamics of the 1060 CE rhyolitic eruption of Big Glass Mountain (BGM), USA, are investigated with field observations, hydrogen isotope and H2O content analysis of pyroclastic obsidian chips and lavas. Field relations at BGM reveal evidence

The caldera-forming Samalas eruption of the Samalas–Rinjani volcanic complex on Lombok, Indonesia, in 1257 CE ranks as one of the most explosive and sulphur-rich eruptions of the past thousand years. Along with other significant events (e.g. Tambor

Breadcrust bombs are pyroclasts displaying fractured, dense surfaces enveloping expanded interiors, and are associated with Vulcanian explosions. We document pyroclasts from the 2008–2009 CE eruption of Chaitén (Chile) that are internally as well
