Urea is the most widely used nitrogen (N) fertilizer, with a projected increase in annual demand of 1.5% in the coming years. After its application to soil, urea undergoes hydrolysis via the urease enzyme, causing increases in the soil pH in the surr

Urea is the N source most widely used in pastures in Brazil. A significant amount of N is lost to the atmosphere by ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions and leached surface or ground water as nitrate contributing to environmental degradation such as t

The urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) reduces NH3 losses from urea (UR) surface-applied to soils, but its efficacy may be lower in acidic soils. The period when urease inhibition occurs efficaciously may change with soil pH.

Best management practices for N fertilization should increase yields while reducing negative environmental effects such as losses by ammonia (NH3) volatilization and emission of greenhouse gases, especially nitrous oxide (N2O). We studied the impact

Sugarcane straw is a source of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), which affect soil temperature and moisture and therefore soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from fertilized fields. The use of a nitrification inhibitor (NI) with N fertilizers is an option

Vinasse is a major byproduct of the sugarcane biofuel industry, recycled in the fields. However, there is evidence that the application of vinasse with mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizers in sugarcane enhances the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Th

The nitrification inhibitors (NIs) 3,4-dimethylpyrazole (DMPP) and dicyandiamide (DCD) can effectively reduce N2 O emissions; however, which species are targeted and the effect of these NIs on the microbial nitrifier community is still unclear. Here,

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emission estimates are important to ascertain the greenhouse gas balance of ethanol produced from sugarcane. We quantified N2O emissions in the presence of sugarcane crop residues, N fertilizer (ammonium sulfate), and a nitrificat

Pastures are complex land covers with a variety of land use systems. This land cover occupies large areas in the globe and is mainly used for livestock production. Brazil is one of the largest livestock producers and has extensive pasture areas. We a
