The design of a polarization tracker and a PMDC for direct-detect RZ-DQPSK PDM systems is reviewed. The error signals are analyzed and their application spaces are identified. Experimental results are demonstrated to verify the designs.

A PMDC working in the cancellation mode is proposed for Pol-Mux RZ-DPSK/ DQPSK systems. It has separate control loops for PMDC and Pol-Demux. It showed 18ps of DGD tolerance in a 112Gb/s bit-aligned Pol-Mux RZ-DQPSK system.

A novel ultra-fast quasi-analytical method capable of directly computing BER in terrestrial WDM systems within few minutes is presented and validated. The modeled BER results remarkably agree with 40 Gb/s duo-binary WDM testbed measurements.
