We demonstrate an optical delay line using a virtually imaged phased-array (VIPA) pulse shaper, producing time delays in discrete steps of 40 ps over the full repetition period of the laser.

A theoretical description of the pulse dynamics in a mode-locked laser including gain dynamics is developed. Relaxation oscillations and frequency pulling are predicted that influence the pulse parameters. Experimental observations of the response of

We calculate the noise properties of a femtosecond frequency comb from experimentally-derived parameters. Using a simple model for a feedback system, we calculate the phase noise spectrum for comb lines across the laser spectrum.

Line-by-line pulse shaping is demonstrated on a 890 MHz repetition rate mode-locked titanium sapphire laser. The high resolution pulse shaper is based on a virtual imaged phased array (VIPA) with a free spectral range of 25 GHz. For our implementatio

We present results of an experimental study of the timing and phase dynamics in a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. By measuring the response of two widely spaced comb lines to a sinusoidal modulation of the pump power, we determine quantitatively the r
