We quantify the global spending burden of humanitarian disaster response. While international response flows are well documented, global domestic spending on disasters is virtually unknown in any comprehensive way. We employ log-log fixed-effects mod

Rice (Oryza sativa cv Taipei 309) suspension culture cells (SCCs) were used as a simple, single cell model system to gain insights into the complex abscisic acid (ABA) signaling response pathways in plants. Following system establishment involving mo

The rate-limiting mechanisms of lime dissolution from a solid pellet into coal ash slag and synthetic slag was investigated using an experiment involving a rotating cylinder of lime in a liquid slag bath at temperatures of 1450−1650 °C. Scanning e

To identify integral and peripheral plasma membrane (PM) proteins from Oryza sativa (rice), highly enriched PM fractions from rice suspension cultured cells were analyzed using two complementary approaches. The PM was enriched using aqueous two-phase

Boron (B) is an essential micronutrient that affects plant growth at either deficient or toxic concentrations in soil. The aim of this work was to investigate the adaptation of barley (Hordeum vulgare) plants to toxic B levels and to increase our und

All species of Mycobacteria synthesize distinctive cell walls that are rich in phosphatidylinositol mannosides (PIMs), lipomannan (LM), and lipoarabinomannan (LAM). PIM glycolipids, having 2-4 mannose residues, can either be channeled into polar PIM

Mycobacteria are the causative agents of tuberculosis and several other significant diseases in humans. All species of mycobacteria synthesize abundant cell-wall mannolipids (phosphatidylinositol mannosides, lipoarabinomannan), a cytoplasmic methylma

Glycopeptidolipids (GPLs) are a major component of the outer layers of the cell walls of several non-tuberculous mycobacteria. The Mycobacterium smegmatis GPLs consist of a diglycosylated lipopeptide core which is variably modified by acetylation and

Glycopeptidolipids (GPLs) are major components of the cell walls of several species of mycobacteria. We have isolated a transposon mutant of Mycobacterium smegmatis that is unable to synthesize mature GPLs and that displays a rough colony morphology.
