Parturition in American Bison: Precocity and Systematic Variation in Cow Isolation

and Summary We observed the birth of 16 American bison calves. Parturition was rapid and the calves were unusually precocial. Parturition occurred in early to mid-afternoon. In an open grassland habitat, 9 of 11 cows remained in groups to give birth.
