As a theory of skill acquisition, the instance theory of automatization posits that, after a period of training, algorithm-based performance is replaced by retrieval-based performance. This theory has been tested using alphabet-arithmetic verificatio

We study the origin of the ultraluminous X-ray source M82-X1 in the nearby starburst galaxy M82. This X-ray source is of particular interest as it is currently the best candidate intermediate mass black hole; it is associated with a 54mHz quasi perio

With a view to understanding the formation of double neutron-stars (DNS), we investigate the late stages of evolution of helium stars with masses of 2.8 - 6.4 Msun in binary systems with a 1.4 Msun neutron-star companion. We found that mass transfer

The evolution of helium stars with masses of 1.5 - 6.7 M_sun in binary systems with a 1.4 M_sun neutron-star companion is presented. Such systems are assumed to be the remnants of Be/X-ray binaries with B-star masses in the range of 8 - 20 M_sun whic

Recently the observationally derived stellar-wind mass-loss rates for Wolf-Rayet stars, or massive naked helium stars, have been revised downwards by a substantial amount. We present evolutionary calculations of helium stars incorporating such revise

According to the standard picture for binary interactions, the outcome of binaries surviving the evolution through a common envelope (CE) and spiral-in phase is determined by the internal structure of the donor star at the onset of the mass transfer,

Based on its Hipparcos proper motion, we propose that the high-mass X-ray binary HD153919/4U1700-37 originates in the OB association Sco OB1. At a distance of 1.9 kpc the space velocity of 4U1700-37 with respect to Sco OB1 is 75 km/s. This runaway ve

We present the evolution of helium stars in binary systems with a 1.4 M⊙ neutron-star companion which will produce double neutron-star binaries, i.e., systems with helium stars more massive than 2.5 M⊙. We found that mass transfer from helium sta
