De Reeuwijkse Plassen zijn de afgelopen decennia zeer eutroof geworden. De hoofdoorzaak was de toevoer van fosfor naar het systeem. De verontrusting over de troebele situatie in de plas heeft geleid tot het uitvoeren van ecosysteemgericht onderzoek.

Overfertilization by agriculture loads polder ditches in such a manner as to allow transition from submerged macrophyte-dominated clear water to water completely covered with duckweed, the latter disturbing aerobic life and diminishing biodiversity.
