An asymmetric synthesis of the highly oxygenated cyclopentanoid antibiotic (+)-kjellmanianone ( 1 ) has been achieved. The key step entailed enantioselective hydroxylation of the prochiral sodium enolate of β-keto ester 2 with the new, enantiomerica
