Fission and fusion are compared as a source of energy for the future. Energy reserves for the two are similar, as are their pollution and ecological characteristics. A remote integrated site policy is recommended for fission.

To obtain a thermonuclear plasma inside a magnetic confinement system, one must either (a) create the plasma in situ from cold gas by ionization and heating or (b) build up the plasma piecemeal by injection from some accelerator or hydromagnetic gun.

After a progression of machines extending over several years, Perhapsatron S-3 shows, by magnetic probe measurements, more symmetrical detachment of the current channel from the walls. Problems and possible improvements in the apparatus are discussed

The counter uses a loud-speaker movement in conjunction with a stop-watch mechanism. It has a greater resolving power than a telephone call counter, and its lower inductance makes it very suitable for operation from a thyratron.

As is well known, the strong synchrotron radiation recently predicted by Trubnikov and Kudryavtsev1 from a plasma containing a magnetic field at thermonuclear temperatures makes it harder to design a thermonuclear reactor using the deuterium–tritiu
