We discuss recent results showing the possibility of reducing further the switching threshold of GaAs quantum well bistable microresonators, taking into account the materials optical properties, both in the nonlinear medium and in the Bragg reflector

We report on recent progress in reducing the power threshold of all-optical bistable quantum well vertical microcavities. Significant improvements are achieved through an increase of the cavity finesse, together with a reduction of the device active

International audience; In future high-speed optical time-division-multiplexed (OTDM) systems, an important factor that needs to be considered for optical pulse generation schemes is the impact of pulse pedestals on the overall system performance. Th

Bulk active region DBR lasers emitting at 1.55 ?m with no absorbing section have been evaluated as optical source for microwave signal generation. These devices self pulsate at 34 GHz with a linewidth of about 150 kHz, making it suitable for low jitt

It had been demonstrated that a two-gain-section bulk active layer Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser allows sub-picosecond pulse generation for a wide range of bias conditions, with the shortest pulse width of 650 fs at 41 GHz.

The use of micro-cavity saturable absorber to significantly reduce the pulse pedestals of an optical pulse source is demonstrated. This reduction in pulse pedestal level is shown to greatly improve the performance of these pulses in an 80Gb/s OTDM sy

A passive all-optical switching gate has been used to regenerate the zero levels of a "...01010101..." 160-Gbit/s bit pattern at 1561 nm. An extinction ratio enhancement up to 11 dB is demonstrated through autocorrelation measurements.

A very low-loss and low switching energy vertical micro-cavity has been developed for all-optical signal reshaping. This saturable absorber-based device shows insertion loss as low as 0.2 dB and a switching energy of 13 μJ/cm2 while keeping a respon
