Adsorption structures of the pentacene (C 22 H 14 ) molecule on the clean Si(0 0 1)-2 × 1 surface were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in conjunction with density functional theory calculations and STM image simulations. The pent

The interaction of Li with Ru was investigated on Ru(0 0 1) and Ru(1 0 9) using work function measurement, temperature-programmed desorption and low-energy electron diffraction. Strong depolarization effects for Li atoms at atomic step sites are obse

The chemisorption of benzoate on a Cu(1 1 0) crystal at room temperature was studied using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. STM images, obtained at 5 K for low benzoate coverage, show isolated surface species that consist of a single Cu

Two large and complex adsorbed organic molecules, coronene (C 24 H 12 ) and C 60 , have been used to produce Si dimer vacancy defects on Si(0 0 1) by thermal decomposition. Studies by STM show that the aligned structural arrangement of the dimer vaca

Ultraviolet light-induced electron-hole pair excitations in anatase TiO(2) powders were studied by a combination of electron paramagnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy measurements. During continuous UV irradiation in the mW.cm(-2) range, photo

Adsorption of H 2 O on the TiO 2 (1 1 0)–(1 × 2) surface was studied in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) using the scanning tunneling microscope (STM). At 300 K H 2 O adsorbs preferentially on the crosslinks of the TiO 2 (1 1 0)–(1 × 2) surface. Cooling

The effect of UV radiation ( 1.6 eV ⩽hν⩽5.6 eV ) on the rutile surface was studied in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) using the scanning tunneling microscope (STM). It was found that the TiO 2 (1 1 0) -(1×1) surface remains unaffected by UV irradiation.

The chemisorption and dissociation of CO has been studied on an atomically-stepped single crystal Ru(1 0 9) surface using several methods. CO chemisorbs on Ru(1 0 9) by means of a mobile precursor mechanism with an initial sticking coefficient of ∼

The interaction of O3 and O2 with the Al(1 1 1) surface was investigated over the surface temperature range of 90–600 K using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The oxidation of aluminum at 300 K with ozone gas was found to proceed with an 8.5 times
