In this article we will describe our recent experiments on the estimation of vocal tract area functions from transient acoustical measurements at the lips. Since the theoretical basis for such measurements has been discussed in several earlier public

“Seismic reflection tomography” is a general inversion method which operates on data obtained from a conventional surface seismic survey (Bishop et al., 1985). We adjust a model earth to minimize the RMS difference between reflection traveltimes

Inverse scattering experiments can be used to infer the spatial dependence of the characteristic impedance of a transmission line, the density of layers in the earth's surface, or the cross‐sectional area function of an acoustic tube. In past formu

Some new methods of deconvolution and of area function computation have been applied to the problem of inferring vocal tract area functions from measurements of the acoustic transient response at the lips. Results with test cavities and with real hum

A reflectance formulation of the acoustic inverse‐scattering method of measuring vocal tract area functions has been developed. We arrive at a partial differential difference equation in which the pressure and area of the vocal tract appear as unkn
