Gut microbiota is widely considered to be one of the most important components to maintain balanced homeostasis. Looking forward, probiotic bacteria have been shown to play a significant role in immunomodulation and display antitumour properties. Bac

Cancers are one of the leading causes of deaths affecting millions of people around the world, therefore they are currently a major public health problem. The treatment of cancer is based on surgical resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or immunothe

In this series of papers, we examine the propagation of waves of finite deformation in rubbers through experiments and analysis; in the present paper, Part I, attention is focused on the propagation of one-dimensional waves in strips of natural, late

We consider the dynamic response of natural, latex and synthetic, nitrile rubbers under non-monotonic dynamic loading conditions; in particular, we recreate an experiment first considered by Kolsky (Nature 224:1301, 1969) in which two segments of a l

We study fracture propagation in stretched natural rubber sheets. Experimental results in specimens stretched less than 3.8 times show a monotonic increase in the crack speed with stretch and can be explained by a numerical model based on neo-Hookean

We performed a series of dynamic loading experiments on iron with pressures of 5–40 GPa at the Trident Laser Laboratory. We used 2.4 ns laser pulses of varying shapes and irradiances of 2 to 1000 GW/cm2 to load a 5‐mm diameter region of rolled ir

We have conducted experiments and numerical simulations to investigate supersonic cracks. The experiments are performed at 85 ◦ C to suppress strain-induced crystallites that complicate experiments at lower temperature. Calibration experiments were
