A skull fragment (VM-0) from Orce, Granada, Spain, dated palaeomagnetically at about 1.6 Myr, is thought by some palaeontologist to be hominid, while others maintain it is equid. If hominid, it would be by far the oldest evidence ofHomo in Europe. Im

Although nitric oxide (NO) kills or inhibits the replication of a variety of intracellular pathogens, the antimicrobial mechanisms of NO are unknown. Here, we identify a viral protease as a target of NO. The life cycle of many viruses depends upon vi

Phospholipase C isoforms delta 1 and delta 3 (PLC delta 1 and delta 3) were expressed in Escherichia coli using the cDNA sequences from human fibroblasts. The enzymes were also expressed with the sequence Met-Gly-His6-Ser-Gly-Leu-Phe-Lys-Arg, a hexah

Mouse embryo fibroblasts (C3H 10T1/2) were exposed to 4 Gy of gamma-rays. The cells yielded 5-8 transformed foci per 10(4) surviving cells. Addition of 100 microM of either eicosapentaenoate or docosahexaenoate to the tissue culture medium reduced th

Rat liver mitochondria and cytosol contain two types of 3-ketothiolases, namely 3-ketothiolases IA and IB, which cleave 3-ketoacyl-coenzyme A (CoA) esters containing four or more carbons and 3-ketothiolases IIA and IIB, which cleave 3-ketoacyl-CoA es

This review is restricted to the operation of the purine cycle in mammalian muscle. A previous review provided a summary of early evidence for the operation of the cycle and of various functions proposed for the cycle. It also provided a brief histor

ADP and ATP and their analogues were evaluated as inhibitors of 5′-nucleotidase purified from heart plasma membrane. ADP analogues are more powerful inhibitors than the corresponding ATP analogues. The most powerful inhibitor found is adenosine 5
