A multimode integrated optical bistable switch using a LiNbO(3) phase modulator in a noncavity configuration was constructed and tested. Bistability and discriminator operation were observed in this device using a He-Ne laser.

A Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with a medium whose refractive index depends upon intensity has a multiple-valued transmission-vs-intensity characteristic. When the incident light is circularly polarized, and the nonlinearity is only cubic in the

We show that our previous exact standing-wave solutions of the Maxwell cold-plasma equations may be generalized to describe partially reflected waves. Using these solutions, we find the transmission and reflection coefficients for intense circularly

The minimum-uncertainty states for systems with many degrees of freedom are investigated. The limiting situation, relevant to the electromagnetic field, is discussed and it is pointed out that the states that minimize Δp Δq do not tend to the coher

It is shown that two-photon-resonant tripling of the ruby laser frequency in cesium vapor is limited by ionization. The laser induced Stark shift is found to be favorable to the process in that it counteracts saturation of the resonant transition.

A new class of exact standing-wave solutions of the Maxwell cold-plasma equations with fixed ions is described. The waves are transverse, and circularly polarized. These solutions permit an analytical treatment of intense wave penetration into inhomo

The density-matrix formalism is used to develop the theory of two-photon-resonant third-harmonic generation in metal vapors taking into account saturation, ionization, laser-induced Stark shifts, and variations in the wave-vector mismatch as a result

It is shown that the normal ordering method of solving boson operator equations leads to closed solutions of the Schrodinger and density operator equations only in certain cases. In particular, a necessary condition for the existence of solutions of
