We report on the delay of optical pulses using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an ensemble of cold atoms with an optical depth exceeding 500. To identify the regimes in which four-wave mixing (4WM) impacts on EIT behaviour, we condu

Quantum memories are an integral component of quantum repeaters—devices that will allow the extension of quantum key distribution to communication ranges beyond that permissible by passive transmission. A quantum memory for this application needs t

We study the operational regime of a noiseless linear amplifier based on quantum scissors that can nondeterministically amplify the one photon component of a quantum state with weak excitation. It has been shown that an arbitrarily large quantum stat

We present a quantum repeater scheme that uses gradient echo memory and probabilistic noiseless amplification. We show that a quantum memory can process quantum information and a noiseless amplifier can distill entanglement.

Optical quantum memory is an essential element for long distance quantum communication and photonic quantum computation protocols. The practical implementation of such protocols requires an efficient quantum memory with long coherence time. Beating t

Quantum optics used to be clearly divided into two camps: continuous variables and discrete variables. Continuous variable experiments measured the quadrature variables of the optical field at side band frequencies using frequency resolved homodyne d

We report on the preparation of entangled two mode squeezed states of yet unseen quality. Based on a measurement of the covariance matrix we found a violation of the Reid and Drummond EPR-criterion at a value of only 0.36\pm0.03 compared to the thres

We demonstrate a new approach to photon number discrimination, relying only on continuous variable homodyne measurements. We apply this technique to the reconstruction of the non-Gaussian one, two and three photon subtracted squeezed vacuum state. Th

The non-linearity of a conditional photon-counting measurement can be used to `de-Gaussify' a Gaussian state of light. Here we present and experimentally demonstrate a technique for photon number resolution using only homodyne detection. We then appl
