This paper summarizes the results of a preliminary assessment of energetic ion rings for use in an ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) reactor. The properties of ion rings are compared with those of electron rings. Ion rings appear to require sizable devices and

This report summarizes the results of a recent ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) reactor study that includes ring and core plasma properties with consistent treatment of coupled ring-core stability criteria and power balance requirements. The principal finding

An introduction describes the critical importance of the relativistic electron rings to the EBT concept and the significance of electron-cyclotron heating to the formation and steady state of the rings. The relation and distinctive features of the pr

Model calculations are described for possible EBT-P designs using a one-dimensional, fluid-transport code. We begin by giving a detailed description of our most updated and complete version of the code itself, so that the appendix is, as far as pract

Electron and ion temperature gradients, as well as finite electron gyroradius (kρe≳1), have been retained to analyze the stability of electrostatic drift waves in the local approximation from the lower hybrid down to the ion cyclotron frequency. T

Based on a hydrodynamic Maxwell formalism of a weakly inhomogeneous magnetized plasma, a mode–mode coupling eikonal relation is derived. Finite wavelength and arbitrary polarization of a monochromatic driver pump have been taken into account as wel
