We discuss an emerging monolithic “photonic integrated circuit” technology for application in future wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks. Based on a planar reflection-grating wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer, and realized in InP-ma

A high performance 16-channel optical add-drop multiplexer is described. The device offers integrated common and discrete add/drop ports for all wavelength channels. Insertion loss between the main input and output ports is less than 6dB and the isol

Summary form only given. This paper reports the realization, for the first time, of a polarization-independent InP-based arrayed waveguide filter that has low internal loss, large fabrication tolerances, and may operate over the entire 1.5-/spl mu/m

We report the first polarization-independent monolithic WDM detector. 8 × 2nm channels, from 1.544μm to 1.558μm wavelength, were demultiplexed and detected by the compact 3.7mm × 4.0mm device without measurable polarization-sensitivity.

Digest of Conference on Optical Fiber Communication.
There is currently considerable interest in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems. In telecommunications, this ranges from full exploitation of the fiber bandwidth in very high bit rate links, through service segregation, to supplying custome
