Potassium tantalate niobate (KTN) single crystal fibers were grown by the modified laser heated pedestal growth method with a cooling apparatus. The constitutional supercooling which prevents stable growth was successfully suppressed by our crystal c

The first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferromagnetic (FM) transition in a Fe 47.8 Rh 52.2 thin film has been studied as a function of temperature, applied magnetic field and internal stress. Although the AFM to FM transition shows a steeper change a

We introduced a novel afterheater which surrounds the optical focal components in the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) apparatus and enclosed the growth assemblies including the focal components in a chamber, in order to control both the temperatu

Hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a‐SiC:H) films are prepared by the electron cyclotron resonance plasma chemical vapor deposition (ECR PCVD) technique. The films are, for the first time, applied as protective layers for phase‐change‐type

The distortion of the bits formed by a magnetic head was studied on GdTbFe films. From read/write tests, it is found that reproduction noise is strongly affected by the film sputtering gas pressure (0.2-0.6 Pa); high Ar pressure causes less reproduct

Fiber type photorefractive crystals are attractive in that they provide both strong optical field confinement which reduces the required light source power and a longer interaction length which allows high angular selectivity in holographic multiplex

Three types of multiple-layer structure are proposed for a two-wavelength-compatible phase-change optical disk that uses an 830-nm beam for writing and erasing and a 670-nm beam for reading. Each disk with an optimized structure exhibits high-enough

We have successfully grown strontium barium niobate (SBN) single-crystal fibers doped with up to 0.5 wt% of Ce by the laser-heated pedestal growth method. Their photorefractive properties were investigated systematically as a function of Ce concentra
