In the presence of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions beryllium compounds inhibit the Ca2+, Mg2+-dependent ATPase activity and the transport of Ca2+ in the sarcoplasmatic reticulum vesicles. The inhibition is reversible and concurrent with respect to the Mg2+ ions.
