Abstract The Carrington event of 1859 has been the strongest solar flare in the observational history. It plays a crucial role in shedding light on the frequency and impacts of the past and future Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events on human societ

Abstract Large-scale solid bodies on Earth such as volcanoes and man-made pyramids have been visualized with solid earth muography, and the recently invented technique, acqueous muography, has already demonstrated its capability to visualize ocean ti

Two extreme solar energetic particle events have been found by carbon isotopes measured in ancient tree rings in 7176 and 5259 BCE. The recorded ~2% increases of atmospheric 14 C for both events exceeds in amplitude of all previously observed events.

Major solar eruptions can accelerate protons up to relativistic energies. Solar relativistic ions arriving at 1 au may cause a solar particle event detectable by the worldwide network of neutron monitors (NMs), a ground-level enhancement (GLE) event.

Two mini neutron monitors are installed at Concordia research station (Dome C, Central Antarctica, 75°06'S, 123°23'E, 3,233 m.a.s.l.). The site has unique properties ideal for cosmic ray measurements, especially for the detection of solar energetic

Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) show a small local anisotropy detected as a diurnal variability of neutron monitor (NM) count rates. As the asymptotic directions of different NMs are diverse, the capability of the GCR diurnal variation observation is also
An important topic in the field of space physics is the quantification of the cosmic-ray-induced effects in the atmosphere and the corresponding space weather effects. Space weather effects, specifically the exposure to radiation at aviation altitude

Besides the well-known 11 year solar cycle, the Sun occasionally produces strong eruptions on the Sun‘s surface and in the corona. They can first be seen as flare events in electromagnetic spectrum down to X ray wavelengths. Within these strong eru

We present a new open-source tool for magnetospheric computations, that is modelling of cosmic ray propagation in the geomagnetosphere, named "Oulu - Open-source geomagneToSphere prOpagation tool" (OTSO). A tool of this nature is required to interpre

Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) are energetic particles originating from galactic or extra-galactic sources. When they arrive inside our heliosphere, they are modulated by the magnetic irregularities in the solar wind flow from the Sun, deflecting and slo
