Background Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a very rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma caused by human herpesvirus-8 (HHV8) that grows in liquid phase within body cavities. The diagnosis of PEL is based on cytology but requires confirmatory ancillary tests.
