Reduction of alkylthiomerthyleniminium iodides proceeds smoothly by use of trimethoxysilane and dilithium 2,3-butandiolate in tetrahydrofuran at 0°C to give the corresponding S,N-acetals selectively in high yield.

Reduction of carbonyl compounds with trialkoxysilane can be readily catalyzed by alkoxides of alkali metal. A considerable high asymmetric induction takes place by use of optically active diolates or even N-lithio 2-amino alcoholates derived from opt

Carbonyl compounds are reduced with trialkoxy-substituted silane to the corresponding alcohols chemo- and stereo-selectively in the presence of alkali metal alkoxide under mild conditions; reduction occurs very smoothly by using an alkoxide derived f
