It has been observed that pollutants mainly cause pollution in the Narmada river and the estuary, which is driven there during high and low tides. The modelling presented here concentrates on phenomena affecting the distribution of pollutants in the

Motivated by the manufacture of carbon fibre components, this paper considers the smooth draping of loosely woven fabric over rigid obstacles, both smooth and nonsmooth. The draped fabric is modelled as the continuum limit of a Chebyshev net of two f

This report addresses the construction of carbon fibre wing boxes and the problems associated with using carbon fibre sheets rather than individual carbon fibre tapes. In the case that the wing boxes are developable surfaces the lay up of carbon fibr

We construct mathematical models for the flow of sugarcane and juice through a sugar diffuser. The models describe how the concentration of sugar in the juice increases during the process. The flow through the sugar cane in the diffuser is analysed.

When a horizontal cylinder is placed on a vertically moving belt coated with a thin layer of viscous fluid, experiments reveal that, at a specific belt velocity, the cylinder can be levitated at a fixed height while rotating around its own axis at an

We consider the levitation of cuboidal blocks by means of the viscous stresses that are generated when the block adheres to a vertically moving wall that is coated with oil. We first describe an experimental procedure that reveals the parameter regim

Recent comparisons between classical Wagner theory for the impact of two liquid droplets and direct numerical simulations in Cimpeanu & Moore (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 856, 2018, pp. 764–796) show that, in some regimes, the inviscid theory over-predict

Solutions for waves travelling transversely in a layered medium satisfy an exact recurrence relation when the transit time across each of the layers is the same. Using such solutions in an alternating-direction splitting method, high accuracy solutio

Homogenisation theory is used to derive Wood’s formula for the speed at which a pressure wave can propagate in an air/water mixture. The smallness of the impedance ratio between air and water results in a dramatic lowering of the wave speed of the

Walking across a room carrying a mug of coffee can often lead to spillage. Everyday experience tells us that it is better to walk slowly or not have the mug too full, but it is also well known that carrying coffee in a bucket with a pivoted handle is
