The influence of vaccine strain and antigen mass on the ability of inactivated avian influenza (AI) viruses to protect chicks from a lethal, highly pathogenic (HP) AI virus challenge was studied. Groups of 4-week-old chickens were immunized with inac

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there were 300,000 cases of Salmonella enteritidis (SE) in 1997. Egg products were associated with many of the cases. To address this problem, many producers implemented flock surveillance of t

Identifying infected laying flocks is a critical component in efforts to prevent eggborne transmission of Salmonella enteritidis to humans. In the present study, egg yolk samples from experimentally infected chickens were tested for specific antibodi

Serological surveillance can be an important component for egg quality assurance programs geared toward controlling problems with Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. enteritidis) within a flock. Serum is the primary sample source for the proc

Vaccination of hens with Salmonella enteritidis (SE) bacterin has become an important industry management tool to reduce both the incidence of SE in flocks and the production of SE-contaminated eggs. After vaccination, antibodies to SE can be found i

Mucosal immunology research has been hampered by the difficulty and labour-intensiveness of collecting samples. This is especially true for sites such as the lung, and the present paper describes a simple method for obtaining samples from this organ

Efficient detection of Salmonella enteritidis inside eggs is critical for confirming that individual commercial laying flocks present a risk to public health. In most standard bacteriological culturing protocols, an initial incubation step is necessa

The crop (ingluvies), an organ for food storage in most avian species, is located at the base of the oesophagus. Previous work in our laboratory showed that, following infection with Salmonella enteritidis, significant anti-S. enteritidis antibody le

The crop (ingluvies), an organ for food storage in most avian species when the proventriculus is full, is located at the base of the esophagus. Little is known about any immunological capacity in the crop, and the current study was conducted to deter

In this report, we show that chickens, infected with Salmonella enteritidis (SE) by oral gavage, produce secretory immunoglobulin As (sIgAs) that specifically bind to numerous SE antigens. Chickens infected with SE showed strong sIgA response against
