In this paper, we describe TRW's latest version of the scanning laser slope gauge (SLSG) which was used to characterize the sea surface in a recent ocean experiment. The SLSG, capable of measuring the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of th

Backscattering experiments at microwave frequencies were conducted off the west coast of Scotland in the summer of 1991. Using a dual-polarization, eight-frequency, X band, coherent scatterometer mounted on the bow of a boat, we measured time-resolve

A simple instability mechanism by which water waves can extract energy from a shear flow is isolated. A cubic equation is derived which provides the instability criteria and the growth rate. This mechanism is effective only if the surface drift veloc

Waves on deep water provide one of the most vivid examples of wave motion found in nature and men have long sought to understand this familiar yet complex phenomenon. It is not surprising, therefore, that the problem of the generation of deep-water w

A new class of three-dimensional, deep-water gravity waves of permanent form has been found using an equation valid for weakly nonlinear waves due to Zakharov (1968). These solutions appear as bifurcations from the uniform two-dimensional wave train.

The properties of high frequency capillary waves generated by steep gravity waves on deep water have been measured with a high resolution laser optical slope gauge. The results have been compared with the steady theory of Longuet-Higgins (1963). Good

Results of an experimental investigation of the evolution of a nonlinear wave train on deep water are reported. The initial stage of evolution is found to be characterized by exponential growth of a modulational instability, as was first discovered b
