Unusually large outbreaks of mumps across the United States in 2016 and 2017 raised questions about the extent of mumps circulation and the relationship between these and prior outbreaks. We paired epidemiological data from public health investigatio

Design of nucleic acid-based viral diagnostics typically follows heuristic rules and, to contend with viral variation, focuses on a genome’s conserved regions. A design process could, instead, directly optimize diagnostic effectiveness using a lear

Diagnostics, particularly for rapidly evolving viruses, stand to benefit from a principled, measurement-driven design that harnesses machine learning and vast genomic data—yet the capability for such design has not been previously built. Here, we d

While investigating a signal of adaptive evolution in humans at the gene LARGE, we encountered an intriguing finding by Dr. Stefan Kunz that the gene plays a critical role in Lassa virus binding and entry. This led us to pursue field work to test our
